Top 10 Cheap Companies To Own For 2014

Matt Rourke/AP WASHINGTON -- The cost of producing goods and services in the United States rose slightly in January, with higher food prices partly offset by cheaper gas. Overall, inflation remains mild. The Labor Department said Wednesday that the producer price index, which tracks prices before they reach consumers, rose 0.2 percent in January. That followed a 0.1 percent increase in December and a flat reading in November. In the past year, producer prices have risen just 1.2 percent, below the Federal Reserve's preferred target rate. Excluding the cost of food, energy and markups by wholesalers and retailers, so-called core prices ticked up just 0.1 percent. Producer prices remain "rather modest, a sign that underlying inflationary pressures are very modest," Annalisa Piazza, an analyst at Newedge Strategy, said in a note to clients. January's producer prices are the first to be compiled since the government revamped its index to make it more comprehensive. Producer prices now include services and construction. Before last month, the index tracked only goods. That change has doubled the producer price index's coverage to include 75 percent of the economy. It is the government's first revamp of the index in 35 years. Inflation has declined in the past two years, posing a challenge for Fed policymakers. During 2013, the producer price index rose just 1.1 percent after rising 1.4 percent in 2012. Both figures are far below the Fed's 2 percent target. Businesses have struggled to raise prices because of a tight job market and meager wage growth. Consumers have found it hard to pay more or demand higher wages. Low inflation has enabled the Fed to pursue extraordinary stimulus programs to try to boost economic growth. The Fed is now trying to unwind some of that stimulus. It cut its monthly bond purchases to $65 billion this month, from $75 billion in January and $85 billion last year. The bond purchases are intended to keep long-term interest rates low to encourage borrowing and spending. But Fed policymakers have expressed concern about the persistence of low inflation. If inflation remains below its target, the Fed could extend its stimulus efforts.

Capstone Turbine (CPST) develops, manufactures, markets, and services microturbine technology solutions for use in stationary distributed power generation applications worldwide. This stock closed up 2.5% to $1.22 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.19-$1.23
    52-Week Range: $1.07-$2.60
    Tuesday's Volume: 6.73 million
    Three-Month Average Volume: 3.66 million

From a technical perspective, CPST bounced notably higher here right off some near-term support at $1.20 with strong upside volume flows. This stock has been uptrending marginally over the last week or so with heavy upside volume flows. This move has now pushed shares of CPST within range of triggering near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CPST manages to take out Tuesday's intraday high of $1.23 to its recent gap-down-day high of $1.30 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CPST as long as it's trending above its recent low of $1.11 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 3.66 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CPST will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.42 to $1.45, or even $1.55 to $1.60.

Beyond the fundamentals, though, news plays an important role in short-term stock movements. Outside the Dow, microturbine producer Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST  ) soared 8.8% after receiving its second large order in the past week. After getting word of a purchase from real-estate and investment firm Related Companies on Tuesday, Capstone got an order today from Southern California Gas to buy three of its C65 uninterruptible power-source units for use at the gas company's data center. Given the relatively small size of the business, which sports sales of only about $122 million over the past year, orders like this have a material effect on Capstone and also draw the attention of other prospective buyers.

Getty Images Bloomberg recently reported that Oracle (ORCL) founder and CEO Larry Ellison saw an 18 percent drop in his pay during fiscal 2013 after he "gave up an annual bonus and the company missed some of its profit targets." This seems even more impressive, considering that Ellison collects a base salary of just $1. But if you dig a little deeper, you'll discover that his pay cut wasn't all that altruistic. You see, he still earned $78.4 million last year. Dissecting Ellison's Pay Stub The bulk of Ellison's pay comes in the form of stock options, which totaled $76.9 million when they were issued last year. Stock options are a common form of CEO compensation. When issued prudently, they can keep an executive's interests aligned with those of shareholders. But Ellison already has a vested interest in Oracle. He founded the company and still owns a hefty 25 percent of it -- a stake currently valued at $36.9 billion. The rest of Ellison's compensation comes via 401(k) contributions ($5,134), benefit plans such as life insurance and long-term disability ($6,122), legal counsel ($2,999), his family's use of aircraft ($85,894), and lastly, security-related costs (more than $1.5 million). Most of these perks are common for CEOs. But, taken together, Ellison's benefits are high -- especially considering his wealth. Ellison holds the title of the third-richest American, according to Forbes. And his name regularly appears near the top of "highest-paid CEOs"lists. Heck, he even owns a Hawaiian island. Needless to say, given Ellison's embarrassment of riches, the extra stock option grants seem excessive. When Enough Is Enough Having the financial priorities of management aligned with the performance of the company is certainly a trait investors like to see. But there is a point where adding any more zeroes to an already-wealthy CEO's paycheck is absurd. There are business leaders who, based on their more shareholder-friendly pay packages, recognize this. Li

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

If headlines are any indication, then Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:SIRI) is one again supposed to be one of the few "must have" investments heading into 2014. If the chart of SIRI is any indication though (and it is), then the SIRI party is over. Since - as they say - money talks, the smart move here may be to listen to what the chart of the satellite radio service is telling you.... that Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE:P), iTunes from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Spotify, and perhaps a handful of other alternative audio entertainment sources are finally getting enough evident traction that Sirius shareholders are spooked. The evidence that the likes of Apple and Pandora are actually stealing business SIRI would normally win is shaky, at best, mind you. Indeed, the subscriber growth trend for Sirius XM remains impressive, and should realistically continue to grow at a steady clip for years. The perception of SIRI relative to P or AAPL, though, is damaged, and changing investors' perception is a heck of a lot tougher than winning new customers is.

Top 10 Cheap Companies To Own For 2014: Whole Foods Market Inc.(WFM)

    Honesty is the best policy
Chipotle is following in other highly evolved, customer-centric companies' footsteps. Earlier this year, Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM  ) made a huge stand by requiring its suppliers to disclose GMO ingredients by 2018. Needless to say, some of its biggest rivals would shudder at the thought of such an undertaking. Given the nature of Whole Foods' suppliers to begin with, though, the company was already way ahead of this curve, part of why management's vision continues to make the stock a stellar investment.

Outside of premium or specialty grocers — think Whole Foods (WFM) or Trader Joe — growth in grocery sales is essentially limited to population growth, which has averaged less than 1% for the past decade. All jokes about Americans getting fatter aside, wee really not eating more, and the grocery business is something of a zero-sum game for existing competitors. Again, outside of specialty or premium stores, new grocery store construction is mostly limited to new neighborhood construction.

    A ready supplier
Malaysia, which is a coal export powerhouse, is going to be there to help fill the void. However, Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE: CLD  ) notes that Malaysian coal is at the lower end of the quality spectrum, particularly compared to its U.S. Powder River Basin coal. That's a positive sign for Cloud Peak's export hopes, particularly as China looks to clean up the most obvious pollution problems related to coal. Right now, Cloud Peak exports about 5% of its coal, but it plans to increase that as U.S. ports increase their capacity.

    Meridian Growth Fund performance

Compass Minerals(CMP) is a leading producer of rock salt and specialty potash fertilizer. Its unique collection of resource assets has helped the company generate historically high returns on capital. We invested in Compass as we believed that earnings were due to turn after four years of weak road salt demand driven by mild Northeast winters and production problems at its potash mines. During 2013 the potash industry was rocked by the potential collapse of a European cartel, which led to falling potash prices. Facing significant uncertainty for the future of the potash market, we sold the stock.

We continue to remain focused on individual stock selection and portfolio construction that identifies quality companies that we believe are experiencing temporary disruptions to their businesses. These disruptions enable us to buy the businesses at attractive prices and provide the portfolio with what we believe is an attractive risk-reward profile for our shareholders.

PotashCorp's difficulty sustaining its pricing power is underscored by recent reports from sulfate of potash (SOP) producer Compass Minerals (NYSE: CMP  ) , which charged a hefty premium of almost $300 per ton against Potash Corp's prices for muriate of potash. Efforts to move away from SOP sales seem to be the right choice -- PotashCorp peer Intrepid Potash'sSOP sales fell by 37%, while the average price received has slumped nearly 14% in the last quarter. Even ore miner BHP Billitonhas recently jumped into the fertilizer industry with a $2.6 billion build-out of a potash mine in Canada, which is all but certain to produce further downward pressure on potash prices.

Compass Minerals (NYSE: CMP  ) is a sleepy producer of a boring product: rock salt. But it has a strong competitive advantage. It owns the world's largest rock salt mine, which luckily is conveniently located near the major deicing markets of the Great Lakes region. This combination of a great mining resource and ideal location provide the company with a wide, crocodile-filled competitive moat.

Compass Minerals (CMP) is a producer of minerals, including salt, sulfate of potash specialty fertilizer and magnesium chloride. This stock closed up 3.4% at $75.60 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 913,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 212,481

    Volume % Change: 315%

From a technical perspective, CMP gapped higher here off its recent low of $64.24 with heavy upside volume. This stock recently gapped down sharply from around $90 to $64.24 with heavy downside volume. That move pushed shares of CMP into extremely oversold territory, since the stock's current relative strength index reading is 25.78. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can experience a powerful bounce higher from. Shares of CMP are now starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CMP manages to take out its gap down day high of $78.20 and then once it clears its 200-day moving average at $79.14 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CMP as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $73.07 or $72.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 212,481 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CMP will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone that started near $90.
