5 Best High Dividend Stocks For 2014

LONDON -- BAE Systems (LSE: BA  ) (NASDAQOTH: BAESY  ) andVodafone Group (LSE: VOD  ) (NASDAQ: VOD  ) operate in completely separate industries, but both companies have an attractive track record of providing high dividend yields.

The two firms also have another similarity -- both depend quite heavily on the substantial income they receive from their American businesses, without which they might struggle to fund their coveted dividend payouts.

I own both shares myself, but am looking top up some of my holdings -- so which of these two high yielders looks the best buy today?

Vodafone vs. BAE Systems
I'm going to start with a look at a few key statistics that can be used to provide a quick comparison of these two companies, based on their most recent annual results:

Vodafone BAE Systems Price to earnings ratio 14.2 11.7 Dividend yield 6.9%
(4.9% without special dividend) 5.1% 5-year average dividend growth rate 7.1% 8.8% Net gearing 32% -10% (net cash)

Vodafone plunged into a loss in the first half of this year, thanks to a hefty 5.9 billion pounds impairment on the value of its operations in Spain and Italy.

Two months ago, shares of Taser (TASR) were doing nothing. Then New York City was told that some of its police officers would have to wear video camera and it was off to the races. During the past two months, Taser has gained 68%.

Taser had a tough time last week, however. It lowered the price on its video service on Oct. 3, which caused the stock to fall 16% by the end of the week.

Taser, however, held a conference call to discuss its new pricing strategy, and JPMorgan’s Paul Coster said it “seems well conceived.” He explains:

TASR has debundled its Axon/Evidence.com offering, while total solution pricing has not changed. The new model charges a lower price for the Axon Flex hardware ($499 compared to $949) but now charges for the first year of evidence.com storage and license fees (previously free). The new strategy is intended to eliminate customized sales contracts, accelerating the sales cycle. The strategy also allows more cost-conscience customers to test basic offerings before upgrading to higher-value solutions…

TASR did not provide retention metrics for customers that have completed the free first year of evidence.com (~2/3 of agencies were on a free plan as of the March Analyst Day). That said, the company stated that it is satisfied with where adoption is and they are hopeful that the new pricing strategy could accelerate the 2017 financial targets provided at the Analyst Day.

As a result, Coster upped his price target for Taser to $13.00, from $12 but kept the stock rated Neutral. “In short, we think the risk-reward is balanced,” he writes.

Taser has gained 1.8% to $14.91 at 9:35. Sturm, Ruger & Co. (RGR) has risen 1.5% to $65.87, while Smith & Wesson (SWHC) is up 0.9% at $10.59.

I recommended selling Taser on August 31. Since then it’s gained 24%.

I think too many investors have failed to put those events and developments in the proper context. Rather, they have come to the conclusion that emerging markets are finished, particularly, they say, as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is expected to turn off the money tap, depriving emerging markets of needed liquidity to protect their weakening currencies and pay their debts. For the time being, the Fed has decided to keep the tap flowing, removing one immediate investor fear. But I think there are also other reasons why investors who doubt the emerging marketsstory need better context.

  • [By Canadian Value]

In the US, we believe the key is whether the economic recovery will be self-sustaining in the absence of the excessively easy monetary policy that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) has been providing via its longstanding Treasury asset purchase program known as Quantitative Easing (QE). Can the Fed orchestrate a steady, manageable rise in interest rates? Will employment and wage growth gather strength and create a virtuous growth cycle without Fed support? And will corporate earnings continue to come through as anticipated by the steady expansion we have seen in valuation multiples? These are all unknowns, but will likely be important parts of the equation for the US market.

  • [By Canadian Value]

Nearly all emerging markets took a hit this summer amid speculation the US Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) would soon begin aperingits prolonged asset purchase plan, which had pumped large amounts of liquidity into the markets globally. When you hear about this aperingof the Fed $85 billion monthly bond purchases, it important to understand the facts. Tapering isn the same as tightening. The Fed-fueled liquidity already pumped in is still working through the system. Additionally, Japan and other global central banks are printing money, adding to the pot.

Economically/p> The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its estimate of world Gross Domestic Product(GDP) growth going forward. Germany (the strongest economy in Europe) has reported disappointing numbers, particularly in capital goods. It looks like Europe is back in recession. The U.S. Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) lowered its estimates of U.S. GDP growth for the next four years. Crude oil, which was trading in a range of $100-$110/barrel, fell to $82/barrel The surprise was an announcement by Saudi Arabia that they would not try to keep the price above $100/barrel. This is a change from their prior policy.
