Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Invest In Right Now

If there was one group of stocks that investors have a general dislike for it is the banks. Huge trading losses, mortgage litigation from the meltdown in 2008 and increased regulation in the form of the new Volcker Rule regulations have all kept enthusiasm on the sector muted. Despite a global bull market in equities that has taken the S&P up more than 60% in the past two years, investment bank trading profits seem likely to be down on a year-over-year basis again this quarter. Otherwise, things were kind of boring and steady, which the research team at Oppenheimer view as a good thing for the stocks in the context of recent years.

In a new research report, they note that bank stocks are not as wildly undervalued as they were throughout the 2010 to 2012 timeframe, but they do think their fundamentals will be rock solid and that they are 5& to 10% undervalued relative to the market. Given the relative safety of the stocks, and the undervaluation in a pricey market, they focus on just five top names to own in 2014.

For instance, though oilfield services firms Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) and Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) have shown a keen interest in developing China's shale resources, the absence of clearly defined and enforceable patent and property protection laws has given them reason to pause.

The Dow surges, but international results remain mixed
The Dow has gotten off to a good start to the year despite being weighed down by a few lagging stocks, such as industrial giant Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) . While a majority of Dow stocks have recorded double-digit percentage gains in 2013, Caterpillar has lost more than 10% so far due to slowing economic conditions around the globe. Sales are falling at the company, and China's recent slowdown has sent investors fleeing.

  • [By Neha Chamaria]

The market was a little wary, though, when some days prior to Oshkosh's announcement, leading construction equipment maker Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) slashed its full-year revenue guidance significantly to $57 billion-$61 billion, from its earlier projection of $60 billion-$68 billion. But what investors should know is that Caterpillar is largely dependent on the beleaguered mining industry for revenue, unlike Terex. That's also the major reason why Caterpillar downgraded its guidance.

The dirt kept sliding out from under Caterpillar (CAT) during 2013. Will it hit bottom in 2014?

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

UBS analyst Steven Fisher and team think it can. He writes:

2013 was a disappointing year for [Caterpillar] across its businesses (ex-LATAM construction). The mining business, in particular, drove several guidance reductions. We expect[Caterpillar] EPS to find a bottom and potentially turn positive over the next 12-24 months as global growth improves, led by North America. We also expect cost reductions and buybacks to be tailwinds…

Still, Fisher urges investors to be cautious with Caterpillar right now. He writes:

Our mind set is that it may be beneficial to be early in order to get ahead of the improvement in earnings, after the stock was a laggard in 2013. However, we think there is some risk that [Caterpillar] guides below the Street with the Q4 report, and some of the[Caterpillar] indicators we assess suggest caution near term. Specifically, UBS expects oil prices to be weaker in 1H14, we expect[Caterpillar] revenues and earnings to decline YOY in Q4 and Q1, and UBS expects the Yen to weaken vs. the US Dollar; all drivers of[Caterpillar] stock performance. Also, we don’t see major near term catalysts in mining and power.

Given Fisher’s mixed message, it shouldn’t come s a surprise that Caterpillar is little changed today at $90.52, even as Terex (TEX) has fallen 0.8% to $41.03 and Joy Global (JOY) has dropped 1.1% to $55.19. Deere has (DE) gained 0.4% to $90.10.

On the individual-company front, shares of Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) are leading the Dow higher today, up by 3.5% at the time of writing. Given Caterpillar's bellwether status, its stock's rally seems tied to the generally positive sentiment today more than anything else. As my colleague Dan Caplinger noted earlier (speaking also of General Electric): "Both Caterpillar and GE need a marked improvement in global conditions to support their stock prices. Given the importance of the U.S. in the overall global economy -- especially on the consumer front, which is arguably most directly tied to employment conditions -- it's reasonable to conclude that better domestic jobs numbers will support economies worldwide."
