Global logistics specialist Expeditors International (NASDAQ: EXPD  ) announced yesterday that the company's CEO would retire effective�March 1.�

Expeditors said�Peter J. Rose will remain chairman through the company's annual meeting in May 2015 as a means of assisting the�new CEO -- who the company expects to name in January -- with building relationships with investors, customers, and other external stakeholders.�The January s meeting will celebrate Expeditors' 35th anniversary.

Reflecting on his presiding over 100 quarters of operation, or some 25 years, Rose said it became clear it was more important to transition and introduce the new CEO to the company's stakeholders.

"I look forward to working with the Board of Directors with our transition to a new CEO, who will be selected from a slate of well-qualified and experienced internal candidates.," Rose was quoted in the press release as saying. "The new CEO will be one resolved to assuring we maintain our cultural values and focus on providing best-in-class service to customers around the globe so that our people and our shareholders enjoy even greater levels of success."

    Meanwhile, small-cap TV broadcaster Gray Television (GTN) is showing some bullish overtones after tracking sideways for the last month and change. GTN is currently forming a cup-and-handle pattern, a classical bullish setup that triggers on a move through the $9.25 level. Don't put too much thought into the cup-and-handle setup itself; instead, just focus on that breakout level at $9.25.

    Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Triangles, and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

    That $9.25 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant -- the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

    My selection of stocks was now almost entirely based upon themes. Instead of seeking out value in out-favor-sectors, I had temporarily diverted to the path of attempting to identify investing themes, although I would only purchase a stock if I deemed it to be a bargain. The major themes I had identified were natural gas related stocks, material stocks such as cement companies, and discounted Chinese growth stocks which made their money by selling their products to Chinese consumers. I also owned significant positions in some other purely American companies which included Casey�� (CASY) and Gray Television (GTN). Ultimately, Gray Television would turn out to be a colossal failure (more on GTN later).

The Company's on-highway customers in these markets are Daimler, Iveco, Scania, and Volvo. Fully-automatic transmission technology has approximately a 6% market share in European truck applications. The Company supplies transmissions to European OEMs. The Company is the exclusive transmission in refuse chassis with Daimler, Dennis Eagle and Renault SA. The Company also supply mining OEMs, such as Atlas Copco UK, Perlini Equipment, Sandvik AB and Terex. As of December 31, 2012, in China, the Company is the provider of fully-automatic commercial vehicle transmissions with a substantial installed base of over 45,000 Allison transmissions, including 30,000 units in transit buses, operated by 90 different bus fleets in 55 cities. The Company's off-highway transmissions are also used in China for energy, mining and construction, by OEM customers including 4th Petroleum and Yantai Jereh Oilfield Services Group Co. in energy applications and Qinhuangdao Tolian Speciality Transporter Co., Sany Group Co. and North Hauler in mining and construction applications. Military

The Company sells all of the transmissions for medium- and heavy-tac! tical whe! eled vehicle platforms, including the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles, Armored Security Vehicles, Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks, Heavy Equipment Transporters, Palletized Loading Systems, M915 Series Trucks, Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements and the Logistic Vehicle System Replacement. In addition, the Company supplied transmissions for Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicles and the MRAP All Terrain Vehicle and for all three potential manufacturers of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicles. Transmissions for the Company's wheeled vehicle platforms are sold to OEMs, including BAE, Daimler, General Dynamics Land Systems, Oshkosh, Navistar and Textron Marine & Land Systems.

The Company is the supplier on two of the three key tracked vehicle platforms, the Abrams tank and the M113 family of vehicles, which are sold directly to the United States military. Additionally, the Company sells parts kits to licensees for the production of transmissions for tracked vehicles manufactured outside North America. The Company has been selected as the transmission supplier for the prime contractors bidding for the United States Army ground combat vehicle.

Service Parts, Support, Equipment and Other (Aftermarket)

Aftermarket provides the Company with a source of revenues as the installed base of vehicles and equipment utilizing the Company's transmissions. The Company has assembled a global network of approximately 1,400 distributor and dealer locations to sells, service and support its transmissions. As part of the Company's brand strategy, its independent distributors and dealers are required to sell genuine Allison-branded parts. The Company offers remanufactured transmissions under its ReTran brand. The Company also provides support equipment to its OEMs to assist in installing new Allison transmissions into vehicles.

    Whereas in the 1970s there were limited ways to hedge against inflation, now there is a cornucopia of currency and international commodities instruments that can not only hedge against inflation but other global shocks, such as market bubbles and even war.

    And it is these very scenarios that investors have been worried about. Since the beginning of the year, stocks, bonds and just about any investment you can think of have gyrated wildly at various times amid concerns of war, inflation and the possibility that the U.S. equity market is overvalued and headed for a correction.

    In response, some market analysts in Bloomberg news reports have offered any number of wildly unsubstantiated statements for why investors should ignore today’s perils. They dismiss the danger posed by Russia�� annexation of Ukraine�� Crimea region (��utin will stop short of other countries or war with the West��. They also argue that the Federal Reserve chairwoman misspoke (��anet Yellen really didn�� mean a rate hike is coming soon. Inflation is under control. It was a rookie mistake��.

    For my money, here’s the most outrageous: The Shiller Cyclically adjusted P/E metric which has predicted the 1929, 2000 and 2007 downturns doesn�� apply (��uggests only a slightly expensive market with low to moderate returns going forward on average��.

    With new records being set by the S&P 500 in the last few months, it stands to reason that some investors have not needed much convincing to stay all in and buying. This mindset has prevailed, even as the impact of a Russian war or conflict, runaway inflation or a market correction could be devastating to investor portfolios, taking years to recover.
